The Harney Basin's wet meadows are filling fast with migratory birds. Friends of Malheur and partners are working together in 'Sharing the Basin' while encouraging visitors to stay-at-home during the current public health emergency, but still staying connected to Malheur National Wildlife Refuge and the Harney Basin.

Malheur Lake is the largest freshwater marsh in the western contiguous United States and is one of the main management units of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in southeastern Oregon.

The marsh provides excellent waterfowl production habitat as well as vital migration habitats for birds in the Pacific flyway. Water shortages have typically been a problem in this semiarid area; however. Wildlife conservation drives virtually all decisions on U.S.
